You know that your bookmarks are more than just a collection of URLs—they’re your personalized roadmap to the web.

Today, I’m walking you through an easy process to safeguard those bookmarks by creating a backup of them in Chrome, then how to restore them.

Whether you’re switching to a new computer or simply want to ensure you don’t lose them down the line, you’re covered.

Jump List

Start by launching Google Chrome. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to access the menu as shown above. Hover over “Bookmarks” and then select “Bookmark Manager.” You can also press Ctrl+Shift+O to jump directly to the manager.

    Head to the Bookmark Manager

Inside the Bookmark Manager, click the three dots again (yes, there’s another set of dots here). Choose “Export bookmarks.”

This will save your bookmarks as an HTML file on your computer. Pick a location you’ll remember, an external hard drive or a dedicated backup folder that is NOT on the same hard drive in your computer as the original bookmarks, because that would defeat the purpose if the drive dies one day and they're both lost.

The HTML file is a universal format. This means you can easily import it into another browser or computer.

Open Chrome on the new machine. Once again, click the three vertical dots and navigate to “Bookmarks,” then “Bookmark Manager.”

Click the three dots within the Bookmark Manager and select “Import bookmarks.” Locate the HTML file you transferred and open it. Your bookmarks should appear almost instantly.

You may be asked if you want to replace the existing bookmarks, whether any exist or not. Click "allow" or "yes" or "OK" to do that (I can't remember the name of the button). It's fine.

    Final Thoughts

Backing up your bookmarks might seem like a small detail, but it’s a simple way to keep your digital workspace organized and resilient against data loss. It’s all about making your browsing experience smoother and ensuring that every useful link you’ve saved is never more than a few clicks away—even if you change devices. Happy browsing!
