Kevin’s Picks: PatchMyPC
With our computers now constantly connected to the Internet, any vulnerability in any program could potentially be used to access our computers, though most of the time, it's unlikely and targeted. That said, keeping programs up to date better ensures our computers remain reliable and secure.
My go-to is PatchMyPC, an all-in-one installer for hundreds of the most commonly used programs.
With the old version (see below), it will automatically detected which programs on your computer need to be updated in its database. Now, you must manually scan, or turn that setting back on.
Otherwise, tell it what you want, and it will take care of it. Click on either "Re-scan" or "Start Updater", then grab a coffee or something; it should be done shortly so you can start using the programs.
It has a few other features. Please check out my full blog post on regarding System Cleanups to learn more.
PatchMyPC is free for home use, though I would honestly pay for it. It's invaluable to me, and has saved me a great deal of time updating programs on my computers, and those of family, friends, and clients over the years.

For many years, PatchMyPC was a portable installer, which was very handy and could even be run from a USB stick. However, with the version released in 2024, this is no longer the case. Many more features have been added, and now, for better or worse, PatchMyPC must be installed on your computer to be used.
