Kevin’s Picks: ExpressVPN
This time, my Quick Pick is ExpressVPN (affiliate link)! There are a few important reasons to use a VPN, and yes, I absolutely recommend paying for one. If you’re not paying for the VPN, you (your data) are the product, and nothing stops them from selling it beyond their word.
I have tried a couple of them, and I love ExpressVPN!
Why ExpressVPN Stands Out for Privacy
What I really like about ExpressVPN is how committed they are to protecting user privacy. There are plenty of valid reasons why someone might not want their online activity tracked, and ExpressVPN makes their stance on this crystal clear.
Even if they’re served with subpoenas from law enforcement, they’re unable to hand over user activity or data because they don’t store any of it during sessions, and it literally no longer exists beyond each session.
When you connect to ExpressVPN, your session runs in a secure virtual machine on one of their servers. Everything happens entirely in RAM (the memory), and NOTHING gets written to the hard drive.
Once the session ends, it’s like it never happened—completely wiped. It’s similar to how your own computer works. Right now, whatever you’re doing exists only in RAM unless you intentionally save it to the hard drive.
You can choose VPN server locations in many countries, including the US, which has the most to choose from.
When you go into the Settings, you can do things like have ExpressVPN disable your internet connection if the connection to the VPN server you’ve chosen disconnects, and perhaps you’re not in front of your computer when it happens.
This is great in situations like when you’re using public WiFi, because anyone within range of the network, could in theory, snoop and grab information being sent over that network, and that’s a problem when it’s private information.
You can also enable Chrome and Firefox extensions to only surf the internet while using ExpressVPN, and have it always turned on when doing so.
