Big Changes Coming to Kevin The Tech Guy

Over the past few months, I’ve been testing the waters to see what might work better for my home business in 2025. At the same time, I’ve been trying to figure out what I can realistically manage as a sole proprietor—especially with my health issues in the mix. There’s always a balance between ambition and what’s actually doable, and I’ve been feeling that tension lately.

In This Post:

  • Shifting Focus in 2025 – I’ve been reevaluating my home business to balance what’s realistic with my health and workload.
  • Free Tech Help Didn’t Take Off – Offering free drop-off and remote support was an interesting experiment, but people tend to stick with big box stores, local shops, or DIY solutions.
  • Ending Repair Services – As of February 10, I’m discontinuing drop-off and remote support to focus on what I enjoy most—blogging, newsletters, and short tech tip videos.
  • A Possible Career Change – After 20 years in IT, I’m considering a shift into healthcare (HCA or LPN) due to my long-standing interest sparked by my dad’s illness in 2016. My previous attempt at an HCA program in 2018 was cut short due to IBS, but with better health management, I’m ready to try again.
  • I’m Not Going Anywhere – Tech will always be a passion, and I’ll continue creating content, just in a way that better supports my health and future goals. Thanks for being part of the journey!

Why Free Tech Help Didn’t Take Off

FREE Drop-off computer repair and remote support services has been an interesting experiment. Getting the word out takes time, and honestly, I’ve never had the goal of making it a full-time gig.

Since January, I’ve been doing this work for free in exchange for recording my process and turning it into content for YouTube and my podcast. But even free services don’t always draw people in the way you’d expect.

The Challenge of Running a Home Tech Business

The reality is that people are used to taking their computers to big box stores or local repair shops, where the service is “good enough” and familiar.

A home-based business—especially one offering tech help for free can be a hard sell. I get it. And let’s be honest, for minor issues, most people just search Google or YouTube for a quick fix anyway.

Time to Call It Quits on Repair Services

So, I gave it a shot, and I’ve decided it’s not worth doing. As of February 10th 2025, I will no longer be offering drop-off computer repair or remote support. Instead, I’m going to simplify things and focus on what I enjoy most—writing blog posts and newsletters, creating short tech tip videos, and I might turn them into short podcast episodes as well.

What’s Staying the Same?

I’ll also keep writing free blog posts and sending out my FREE Substack newsletter.

If you find my content valuable, I’d really appreciate your support—whether that’s a monthly contribution or a one-time tip using the options on my website.

A Big Career Shift: Heading Back to School?

After 20 years in IT, I’m seriously considering a career shift. I’ve applied to a couple of programs to become a Health Care Aide or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and we’ll see how things unfold. If I go for the LPN program, I need to do some upgrading first, and the waitlist likely means I won't get into the program until next year. The HCA program itself is 30 hours per week (considered full-time).

What brought this on? During my Dad's terminal illness, before he passed in 2016, I had frequent encounters and conversations with healthcare workers, including Health Care Aides and LPNs. That was the first inkling that I wanted to do that kind of work.

In 2018, I started taking an HCA program, but was unsuccessful due to struggles managing my IBS, and I was forced to quit the program, but I was always intent on trying again at some point.

As my health improves due to discoveries I've made to better manage my IBS, that will give me more time, flexibility, and energy. I’ve been learning a lot about managing my IBS symptoms—something I continue to document on my Life With IBS newsletter on Substack (which is also free).

Don’t Worry, I’m Not Going Anywhere

That said, I’m not walking away from this. I want to emphasize that. I’ll still be writing blog posts, putting out my newsletter, and making Quick Tip videos. One 5-10 minute video per week, roughly.

Tech will always been a passion of mine, and I love helping people navigate it. These changes just allow me to shift my focus, take better care of my health, and (hopefully) get ready for college in the fall.

I appreciate everyone who has followed and supported my work, and I hope you’ll continue to do so. I’m not going anywhere—just making some necessary adjustments.
