A Friendly Reminder: Patch Tuesday Was This Week, and It’s a Great Opportunity to Give Your Computer a Tune-Up at the Same Time
Microsoft’s January 2025 Patch Tuesday is here, bringing critical updates for Windows 10 and 11. While installing these updates is essential for keeping your computer secure, it’s also a great time to knock out a few other maintenance tasks as part of a Monthly Tune-up.
Here’s how you can combine both to keep your system running smoothly.
Please note that all steps, apps, and links, and more details can be found in my Monthly Tune-Up blog post.
Step 1: Update Windows
This month, make sure you’ve installed:
- KB5050009 (Windows 11 version 24H2)
- KB5049981 (Windows 10 version 22H2)
These updates address serious vulnerabilities, including ones that could let attackers steal login credentials, run malicious programs, or crash your computer. To check for updates:
1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Windows Update.
3. Click Check for updates and install anything available.
Step 2: Tidy Things Up
While updating Windows, take a few minutes to clean up your system:
- Use CCleaner to clear junk files, temporary internet files, and browsing history (optional). Leave cookies alone unless you have a specific reason to delete them.
- Run Advanced SystemCare to clean deeper, check for spyware, and fix security holes. The Pro version offers more features, but the free version works well for basic cleanups.
Step 3: Check Antivirus Status
Ensure your antivirus is active and up to date:
- For free protection, use Windows Defender.
- For paid antivirus, I recommend ESET Antivirus.
A healthy antivirus program is key to catching threats before they become a problem.
Step 4: Update Your Programs
Outdated software can create security risks. Use PatchMyPC to scan for and update over 300 commonly used free programs. It’s quick, free, and effective.
Step 5: Review Startup Programs
Over time, programs you don’t need may sneak into your startup routine, slowing your computer down. Double-check what’s running at startup and disable unnecessary programs. If you’re not sure how to do this, check out my blog post about managing Windows Startup.
Step 6: Update Your Drivers
Updated drivers improve performance and reliability, but finding them manually is a hassle. Use Driver Booster to simplify the process. The Pro version is worth considering, but the free version works fine if you’re patient.
Installing updates like KB5050009 and KB5049981 keeps your computer safe from the latest security threats. Pairing these updates with a Monthly Tune-up ensures your system stays secure, fast, and reliable.
